Jacksonville Sunrise Rotary Club

On a cool, rainy Tuesday morning, 11 Rotarians and three guests gathered in the Holiday Inn Express meeting room in South Jacksonville.

In the ongoing saga of a hotel function room, this dark and dreary morning found the meeting room clean and tidy with a table and chairs ready, with only a group of vacuum cleaners keeping watch in one corner. Jay, demonstrating “service above self,” provided chocolate chip cookies (leftovers) to all comers. The help was greatly appreciated.

In attendance were Chair Linda Meece, Don Pigg, Sonie Smith, Cindy Boehlke, Jane Becker, Ella Scaggs, Pat Pennell, Jay Jamison, Sarah Robinson, Gordon Jumper and Sarah Edmiston, along with three representatives from the Morgan County Soil and Water Conservation District. . With Rotary’s battery-powered clock hidden by the dry-erase board, President Linda relied on her internal clock and rang the Oct. 25 meeting to order at 6:59 a.m. Gordon led the Pledge of Allegiance , Jane led the recitation of the Four -Way Test and Pat Pennell gave a fitting invocation. The rotations were done by Jane, Cindy, Jay and Sarah Edmiston. Sarah Robinson gave all Rotarians in attendance a reason to donate to the Scholarship Fund with appreciation.

Next, the Lasagna Love service project from the previous Saturday was reviewed. Sarah Robinson circulated a collage of photos taken at the event and reminded members of the delivery process and that she receives an email on Monday listing those in need of a tasty meal. No lasagna had yet been requested. Sarah Edmiston reminded members that they are invited to join the Jacksonville Rotary Club for its Squeal at the Wheel event on Halloween night at the Ferris wheel. Bring candy. Sonie reminded members that the Salvation Army ringing will be from 9 am to 4 pm on November 19 at County Market. She will bring a sign-up sheet soon. Check your hours.

Cameron Ruyle of the Morgan County Soil and Water Conservation District was on the rise. He took to the podium and described how the organization got started during the Dust Bowl and what federal and state organizations it works with to help farmers who have land in the floodplains develop a conservation plan. Informative documents were distributed. Another district representative, who works with the federal government, reviewed federal programs. He and Cameron answered many questions on a variety of farmland issues from their attentive, albeit small, audience. After a round of applause, the men (who clearly like to get up early) were invited to join.

Linda closed the meeting at 7:52 a.m.

Our next meeting will be November 1 at the Spirit of Faith Soup Kitchen.
