LACEY — That’s five years in prison for a township man who admitted to scamming his then-girlfriend for a total of more than $217,000, according to the Ocean County District Attorney’s Office.
Ross Miserendino, 56, was sentenced in Ocean County Superior Court on Friday, after pleading guilty to theft in August.
In 2019, the victim, also a resident of Lacey, began to suffer from medical issues that left him temporarily unable to manage his own finances.
Miserendino — who was dating the woman at the time — offered to help her and gained access to her checks and bank account information in order to pay her bills, said Ocean County District Attorney Bradley Billhimer .
Instead, Miserendino emptied the victim’s bank account over the next year, signing his name without his authorization on 146 checks totaling $171,000.
The majority of those checks were made out to Enrique Roldan, 43, of Jackson, the prosecutor said, while Miserendino wrote some for himself.
Robbery charges filed in June 2021 against Roldan were still pending on Monday.
Miserendino also took out an American Express credit card in the victim’s name without his authorization and racked up approximately $34,000 in debt using that account.
He also stole personal property worth approximately $11,000 from the woman’s home.
In addition to his prison sentence, Miserendino was ordered to pay back $217,300 to the victim.
