Michiganders bet big money in first year of online betting
If ever there was a question of whether Michigan residents would embrace online gambling, last year put it to rest for good. For the inaugural year, 2021 has proven that online gambling in the state is a huge success.
For the first year of legalizing sports betting and online casino gaming here in Michigan, the state saw nearly $3.7 billion in online betting. According to WXYZ in Detroit, sports betting and online casinos ended 2021 on record high with over $500 million in sports betting and over $120 million in online casino revenue. These numbers come from the folks at PlayMichigan who handle tracking retail game development in Michigan.
“Bettors fared much better with their bets than in November, but it was still one of the best months for Michigan sports betting,” Matt Schoch, principal analyst for PlayMichigan.com, said in a statement. “Sports betting and online casinos exceeded expectations in their first year, especially online casinos. And the last four months for sports betting has really added an exclamation point to the first year.
Considering online sports betting and casino gambling became legal in Michigan in January 2021, those are pretty high numbers. As the Michiganders played their favorite casino games and bet on those games, significant revenue was generated. According to WXYZ, PlayMichigan reports that the state had $3.97 billion in online and retail betting and $3.7 billion in online betting and all generated $292.2 million in revenue.
So where were the Michiganders placing all these bets? It appears that DraftKings is a favorite gambling game with the most bets online with FanDuel and BetMGM as the betting choices for the state.
